Increased enrollment and gender equity at
Alok Girls' Academy

This February, we are welcoming a new class of students to the Alok Girls' Academy. Thanks to your support, we are now teaching 200 girls in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.

We also were able to hire new women teachers. According to USAID, in South Sudan women constitute only around 12.4 percent of the teaching force in South Sudan’s primary schools and 10.5 percent of teachers in secondary schools.

The VAD Foundation staff is a remarkable 40% women and 60% men. We have a blend of international teachers and local teachers. We are training local teachers and mentoring girls interested in education to ensure that quality education continues in South Sudan.

With your support, the Alok Girls' Academy can continue to change lives.

We are raising funds to continue to expand our enrollment and our teacher training programs. The VAD Foundation provides a sustainble model of education. While education is our focal point, our programs are comprehensive and will include community development projects to fund the school.

As a first step toward sustainability, we are working with local partners to start a community farm and seed bank. The farm will provide increase food security and financial literacy for the girls, their families, and their community. The girls will learn sustainable farming techniques. They will then turn agriculture into businiess class as they will sell their surplus in the market. We are also looking at small-scale community development projects like a bee farm and honey production facility.  This all begins with education. Thank you for making sustainable development possible.
